Review of the Brother MFC-5890CN, MFC-5895CW Printers

Brother MFC-5890CN proves that LED multifunction can print easily and up to the quality of equivalent lasers and use much simpler mechanisms. This printer is full of features although its costs are not that cheap. Color laser printers like the Brother MFC-5890CN are still advantageous over their cousins, inkjet ink cartridges.

They are usually quicker and have a completely dry printing process with less fuzziness from ink spreading over the paper. Although, color lasers do not print good quality photos, the rest of the printing is perfect. Brother MFC-5890CN is workgroup or small office multifunction printer with fax and printing at a fair price and featuring a LED printer rather than a true color laser.

The best thing with Brother MFC-5890CN being a LED printer is that it will use other mechanisms for creating images on its drums and this is simple and cheap and compatible with generic cartridges. It also involves fewer moving parts. LEDs produce very good quality prints. MFC-5890CN has a conventional layout with a steep rake in its front since the print part of this unit is deeper than the combination of scanner and control panel. The scanner is integrated well into the top part of the multifunction and its control panel. It has a 30 sheet ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) and is full of buttons and display. There are eight buttons at the left part and keys for copy, fax and print.

At the center is a dual line 16 character backlit display with illuminated mode buttons and a 4 way square with navigation keys, entry of pass-codes, a number pad for faxing and buttons for starting and stopping scan and copy jobs. It has a USB port which is below the control panel and supports PicBridge and USB drives. Directly below it, is a 250 sheet paper tray. The back part consists of sockets for Ethernet and USB connections. Brother MFC-5890CN also supports wireless technology. Drivers for Windows, Linux and OS X are supplied through cups. Drivers for Windows are host based thus do not explicitly support PostScript or PCL.

Being a Brother laser jet printer, Brother MFC-5890CN supports the use of replacement toner cartridges like the generic cheap printer ink cartridges. Black and color cartridges are usually in one capacity each. They last for 2200 and 1400 pages respectively, but use of replacement toner cartridges such as generic toner cartridges may last a bit longer. This is because generic ink is generally cheap and does not vanish quickly hence it is economical. This printer offers a speed of 13.33ppm and 7.69ppm for text and graphics respectively.
